ET 630: Digital Communications Class

Educational Technology Masters Information

I am a Master's student at Loyola University in Baltimore Maryland.  I am creating this project as a part of my Digital Communications Class, but I would like to see the project come to fruition.  The original idea, or project that I gained this idea from can be found here.  Mr. Boggs, created his project for middle school orchestra students and classroom exchanges.  As a fellow music educator, who also teaches my students about our Country's Nation Anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner, I wanted to give them an opportunity to expand their learning and be a part of a more global learning experience.

Activity Structure

The activity structures outlined in the Marcovitz text all have key identifying points.  The National Anthems Heard 'Round the World project doesn't focus on one specific type of exchange, but utilizes a few exchanges.  The first was the Interpersonal Exchange, which was were educators and students exchange information.  The most common exchange is email, which the teachers will be utilizing, but students will also have an opportunity to participate in a Mystery Skype, to learn more about each other's cultures and Anthems.

My project could also be considered a Work and Experience Exchange, because the classes are posting their final projects to this site, so they can be viewed by other classes and educator's from around the world.  In order to post the final projects we will need written permission from the parents of students participating, and follow the county guidelines for posting student work online.

The Mystery Skype portion of my project also allows it to fall into the Strategies Exchange activity structure.  Students are using their National Anthems as a basis for creating clues to help their global classmates figure out which country they are from.  This is similar to the Landmark Game, outlined in the Marcovitz text, under the Strategies Exchanges category.  Students will also need to problem-solve any challenges that will arise from working with another country, including timezones, and language barriers.
